City Focus No 3: Sittard, The Netherlands

Published on 7 June 2022 at 18:51

At the weekend, Silent Spring Consultants visited the city of Sittard, located in the municipality of Sittard-Geleen in the Netherlands – a city that has won the title of Greenest City in the Netherlands for several years running. Sittard is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and you can discover its history by enjoying a stroll amongst the ancient architecture, its churches and monasteries, the city wall and the city gardens and park.

Just off the central square you can enjoy the piece and tranquillity of green-blue walled spaces. The market square with its terraces is the ideal place to spend time on a sunny day and mature trees provide cooling shade whilst walking about the narrow, winding streets with many shops and boutiques. In 2015, plans to create a Slow City in Sittard won 3rd prize.  The Slow City movement began in Italy (inspired by the Slow Food concept) and is about sustainable development, healthy living and urban resilience.
